TBABJ 2025 Griot Drum Scholarship Program

The Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists (TBABJ) is now accepting submissions for its annual Griot Drum Scholarship Program. The scholarship program aims to expand opportunities in journalism by supporting students currently pursuing a college degree in journalism or a media-related discipline (broadcast, print, or online).

To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently enrolled in college (undergraduate or graduate)
  • Have a connection to Tampa Bay, i.e. attended school or once resided in Citrus, Hernando, Pasco, Polk, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Manatee, or Sarasota counties

Candidates must provide all of the following supporting documents when submitting an application:

  • College transcripts (unofficial)
  • One letter of recommendation (professor, dean, faculty member,  internship coordinator, employer, etc.)
  • In a brief essay or video, tell us about your journalism or communications career aspirations. Minimum 300 written words or a video up to 90 seconds.
  • Work samples (published, broadcast, or school assignments), including work that sheds light on underserved and underrepresented communities.

The deadline to apply is 11:59 p.m. on October 12, 2025.

Winners will be announced no later than Friday, October 24 and invited to attend the Griot Drum Awards & Scholarship Ceremony on Thursday, November 13, 2025 at the Le Méridien Tampa.
